Cricket, Hockey & Bible Interpretation Basics!

Duke Jeyaraj

If someone says, “Australia lost to the Netherlands” you immediately and without realizing it ask, “in what game?”. Because the context colors the meaning. If Australia had lost to the Netherlands in a game of Football as they did in the World Cup 2014, it is not a shame. But if they did in a game of cricket, it is a shame and its an upset! When we read a verse in the Bible, we must also ask questions that leads us to the context of the verse. Otherwise, we will misunderstand Author’s Intended Meaning (AIM) of that Bible verse. If Paul writes, “I do not allow a woman to speak” we must ask “in what context”? If he writes, “Christ is the firstborn of creation…” we must ask “in what context?”. Otherwise we will use the Bible to teach doctrines the original God-inspired writers of the Bible never intended us to teach.
