Does one’s willingness to love and stay with a person for the rest of one’s life, no matter what, give you the license to have sex with that person BEFORE marriage? Absolutely not! The Song of Songs Bible couple unpacked God’s gift of sex only after their wedding night (SS 3:11 describes their marriage). Till then, the girl’s virginity was compared to a “locked garden”, “spring closed up tight” and “a sealed fountain” (SS 4:12). Following the wedding, the bride invites the groom to enjoy the garden of her body which was so far sealed (SS 4:15b). And the groom does just that (SS 5:1). The girl fiercely protected her virginity till wedlock, in other words.
